Laocoön is a priest in ancient Greek mythology, he and his two sons were entangled by snakes to death. The story was depicted by many ancient artists, most notably the marble statue of Laocoon and his sons. This marble statue of Laocoon and his sons depicts Laocoon and his two sons, one trying to free himself from a snake entanglement and the other completely ensnared. Laocoon, himself entangled in the snake, reached out to try to free his son. This sculpture very vividly shows their desperation and helplessness, as well as the fearfulness and poisonousness of the snake.
